An access audit identifies any “reasonable adjustments” that should be made to policies, practices, procedures and premises where any of these creates a potential barrier to disabled people; this includes physical features.
Carrying out an access audit comprises a series of tasks which typically commence with an initial briefing followed by:
a detailed site survey
consultation with building users
debriefing to include verbal summary of main actions
preparation of a written report to record and communicate the outcome of the audit.
A written access audit report provides an action plan to consider such issues as physical constraints, alternative ways of providing services and the reasonableness of making the adjustments identified.
